30 Day Recap

Mental State

I don't actually want to write this. My 30 day challenge is officially over, and instead of a digestive recovery day, it turned into a free for all. The disappointing thing is I can already feel my skin starting to be angry with me, and a strange inability to breath deeply (though I'm sipping on peppermint tea, which is helping.) For the American Gut Project participation, I'm going to need to carefully track what I eat for the next 7 days, so I had planned on not tracking food today. Hence… it being a free-for-all. It seems that I haven't solidified my healthy habits yet, and I still need the accountability of recording what I eat. Publicly. It's hard to remember that I'm the one who's losing out if I don't treat my body with the care it needs <3

Unfortunately, this lapse also means I have to put off my methodical food re-introducing which will help me pinpoint exactly what foods are the culprits behind my skin issues.

I can't say I totally regret the delicious things that were consumed (hehe :) however I'd rather not make them public. But I feel like I'd be lying if I didn't, so here goes:

Nourishment

 • 12:00--Sauerkraut, Gut Elixir, 1 egg and kale in ghee
 • 3:30--2 cups of black coffee, gluten free peanut butter brownie, gluten free slice of lemon bread (both freaking ridiculously indulgently delicious!!)
 • 7:00--1 cup of rice, 6 small slices of french bread dipped in olive oil, 1/3 cup bread pudding
 • 9:00--double chocolate brownie (I'm in a glorious sugar-coma) 1 TBSP nutella, 1/2 piece of string cheese, peppermint tea
 • … that actually wasn't as hard as I thought. I feel better :)

Cash Check

This isn't for today, but rather is an analysis of the last 30 days of spending. I totaled $381.46 on food. This includes all groceries AND eating out or having coffee, and averaged out to be $12.71/day, so about $4/meal. All things considered… needing improvement, but not as bad as it could be? :/

Conditioning

Today I did some of my own yoga (20 minutes or so) and spend a wonderful half hour or so at a nearly empty ice rink a mile from my house, spinning and speeding and twirling and pushing and regaining my skating confidence! It was DEFINITELY a workout, and a super fun one, at that :)

PS

I've had to realize something: I work and am in school and need to sleep and take care of myself and have a social life. That being said, even though I would like to write articles and make videos and all that jazz, now is not the right time. Now I need to focus on my art. This 30 days has been glorious for helping me get back on track and delving into some new information, but health as a research topic is going onto the back burner while I address more immediate and pressing issues. I'm am in my 4th and final year at The Atelier, and that needs to be my focus.

Love and contentment to anyone who has followed my brief introduction to what promises to be a life-long journey <3

I am SO ready to check out my inner ecosystem!

I am SO ready to check out my inner ecosystem!

Last Day!!! I got a little excited and splurged. So much for a final push :P My poor digestive system deserves a break, meaning tomorrow will be a total fast day.

My gut kit from the American Gut Project came today--I went over to my Gut Buddy Lynn's house and we chatted about all things art, health and life while geeking out on kombucha tea goobers and the joys of nutritional discoveries. I know some amazing people :)

She also sent me home with homemade latin sauerkraut and a bar of 98% dark chocolate. I'm spoiled. Our gut endeavors will require us to keep a food diary through caloriecounter.com for 7 days… so I guess my food tracking is not at it's end! It'll be really fun to see something that shows calorie content and macro and micro nutrient profiles. Just cuz I'm curious. If there's a way to do it I'll post those. Again… today is FAR from a finish line. 'Tis merely a prologue :)

Nourishment

Day 28

Mental Status

Introspective. Wondering how I want to channel my time and energy in the coming years. Lots of unanswered questions that don't necessarily need to be immediately addressed, but are fun and a little bit scary to think about. Blessed by all the amazing people in my life :)

Oh, and I can't believe it's Day 28!! However, even though my 30 Days of documenting are coming to an end for this go-round, my newly acquired habits are being built to last. Saw this quote on Pinterest and it sums up my thoughts on this perfectly:

Nourishment

 • 8:00--bone broth, carrot, gut elixir, pickle
 • 10:00--coffee with coconut milk
 • 12:30--sliced plantain fried in coconut oil, red pepper, sardines, a grapefruit, and a spoonful of peanut butter :)

 • 8:00--a little bit of lamb and some broth
 • 10:00--an apple and an orange

Cash Check

$6.61--Turkey chili and kombucha at Mississippi Market, prepping for an evening of waiting tables at The Fig

Conditioning

Geez. I'm kinda dropping the ball on this! I'm thinking about cutting my yoga practice down to twice a week and just paying for it instead of cleaning for practice. Time-wise it's really challenging and for where I'm at, I think I'd be best served by doing 5 days of HIIT and 2 days of Bikram Yoga. And maybe have days of nothing (like today) go back to being the exception rather than the norm ;) Process! There's a reason I named this blog "Practicing Life."

Day 27

Mental Status

… Yikes! I am seriously behind on updating this thing. I hope I can remember what I ate the last three days. I'm actually starting with Day 27 and then I'll work backwards (although I'll post them in order.) • 10:30--coffee with coconut milk
 • 1:30--2 apples
 • 5:30--like… 1/3 cup of peanut butter. Which, since it's technically a legume, is not something I should've eaten. Actually… I had a couple slip ups last night (it's Saturday morning) but I don't think I'm going to beat myself up over it because I know that shucks me into a downward spiral I don't want to be in. So, oops! Moving on :)
 • 6:45--2 sips of red wine (with the blessing) and a bite of Challah bread (also with the blessing--I'm loving Erev Shabbat at the Micko's <3) a huge salad with lots of veggies and no "dressing" but lots of avocado (which works just as well!) green beans in garlic butter, meatloaf, a few strawberries, and (here it goes…) 2 small gluten free coffee flavored brownie marble things that were dense and moist and amazingly delicious made with almond flour. Okay. I said it so now I can really move on. That was kind of therapeutic!

Not today, but I am very muscle aware in my lower abs and a little bit in my arms from yesterday's 12 minutes of crazy.

Day 21

Thank to Lynn for letting me borrow this! I went to a local bookstore intending to buy a copy… and they said they don't keep "text books" in stock. I just smiled as though, of course I needed it for a class! … :l

Mental State

Tired :( I started working on another section in a series of articles that I'm writing called "Food Logic" and completely lost track of time. I'm really excited about it though! I got to the part in "Your Personal Paleo Code" where Chris begins to discuss food reintroduction (which I'm not at yet in my own journey) so I decided to take a break on that book and begin a book that's been on my to-read list for about a month--Weston A. Price's "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration."

Oh my Lord. I don't know why this isn't a mandatory read for every doctor, nutritionist, dentist and parent-to-be in existence since he wrote it in 1939. You'll have to wait for the article series to see why (or buy a copy and read it yourself!!) but it's really exciting, and I hope I can help get the information out, even in a small way.

I feel like I'm an art student by day and a college student by night… without getting accreditation for either.

And so it goes. But I'm far from complaining--I feel SO fortunate to have both opportunities without the burden of student loans, and without needing to be completely financially independent (thanks mom and dad! :)

I'm doing my best to make your love, support, and money a worthwhile investment! Love you guys <3

Nourishment

 • 8:20--Gut Elixir, 2 little pickles, leeks and bacon in ghee and bone broth with 3 eggs and a little bit of shredded sweet potato

 • 10:00--1/2 plantain, 1/2 onion, some sweet potato, and 2 garlic gloves in coconut oil

Yeah… that's pretty much what I looked like ;)

Yeah… that's pretty much what I looked like ;)

These are crazy things one is told to do in Bikram Yoga. Sometimes I think I'm a ballerina in the posture at our left. Today was not one of those days. Today was a day that "coming up higher on the toes" was about as likely as flying. As in, not particularly likelyI DID, however, touch my forehead to the floor :) It's amazing how even though we do the same 26 postures, every class is so different!

 • 6:15--a bowl of AMAZING chili <3 and a honeycrisp apple
 • 10:00--another honeycrisp apple

Conditioning

Bodyrock! (I didn't use the sandbag… I think I'd have fallen over :P)

Any sniffles that remained from last week's sick stint are completely gone. I went to the 6 a.m. Bikram Yoga class this morning. It was an actual Intermittent Fasting Day. • 2:00--A late brunch with my beautiful friend Molly! (Three hours of geek-out time on food, organic beauty, and solving the world's problems :) Yam fries in coconut oil, scrambled eggs in ghee w/ leeks and bacon, bone broth with dulse flakes, and a delicious pomegranate.

Who doesn't love that faint dirt flavor?

$59--$42 at Mississippi Market and $17 at Trader Joe's. I FINALLY went grocery shopping, and should be good to go for the whole week! Challenge to self: no groceries until next Sunday.

...This shouldn't sound as daunting as it does :l Produce is an expensive addiction. The leeks. And bell peppers. And glorious sweet potatoes.

did, however, overcome the desire for a bag of Turkish apricots. Little victories :)

Conditioning

20 pushup/burpee/tuck jumps. Not much, but it definitely got my heart rate up this morning!

Day 16

Mental Status

I have officially passed the half-way point! It's weird but these habits I'm either beginning or re-cultivating already feel normal. It's less of a discipline and more of a joy :) I feel stronger physically and mentally. I also took a nap today <3 Me and sleep are beginning a beautiful relationship.

I've actually:

That's my Emu. He was really excited to help me out with his wonderful natural oils :) Can you tell?

That's my Emu. He was really excited to help me out with his wonderful natural oils :) Can you tell?

 • Dropped to 136.5 lbs! (I realized after starting that I wasn't at 138… I began at 142.) My body feels like somewhere I want to be :)
 • My skin has significantly improved. Lots of stuff still moving through and clearing up, but, overall, it's on the mend! I just got some Emu Oil 2 days ago and have been combining it with my moisturizer before bed. It's supposed to be really good for wound healing and is used for burn victims and scarring. We'll see how that experiment goes, but so far so good.
What I do not want my creative time to turn into :P

What I do not want my creative time to turn into :P

Side note: I had a moment of self-awareness this morning--sometimes I am saved by my computer dying. If I don't have a reason for what I'm looking at (like checking Facebook just to check Facebook) it is a fast and furious downward spiral to things I DO NOT CARE ABOUT.
I did just that. Checked Facebook. And 40 life-wasting minutes later I had somehow "surfed" my way from Facebook, to a link about a girl who pukes to make her art, to a Jay Leno interview with Miley Cyrus where he showed an adorable video of her as a toddler, then to googling Brandie Cyrus since I didn't know Miley had a sister, to watching a youtube video of some girl claiming to be Miley Cyrus' cousin Brandie. (Who doesn't exist.)
At which point (thank God) my computer died.

Apart from that, I got to sleep in (yay!) and have a leisurely day of catching up around the house while podcasting, reading, and working on some writing projects. Now that my intentional brain power is back, the computer is safe :)

Nourishment

 • 10:30--Horseradish, potato starch in water, bone broth with dulse flakes
 • 12:30--Beet, plantain, and 1/2 sweet potato and 1/2 a leek in ghee with 3 eggs, sprinkled with Brewer's yeast
 • 4:30--apple, kombucha

Native forrest brand coconut milk--one of the only brands that comes in a BPA free can!

Mental Status

Coffee with coconut milk. Which should really be called "coconut crack" masquerading as a coconut flavored combination of whipped cream and butter. (I love having ZERO guilt about consuming something so decadent!)

This is definitely not deprivation :)

It's actually day 15, so I'm catching up, but I'm feeling great. I got to go to yoga last night--Sarah (the owner of the studio) was teaching, and I swear, that woman knows exactly what to say to push you to your edge.

I am incredibly aware of all of my muscles today. Feels good to know I worked my butt off! No wonder I've been so hungry today...

Day 13

One of my favorite podcasts, Radiolab, did a great program on Sleep . The idea of "brain-washing" as a literal function of sleep is explained as follows: Throughout the day, we process TONS of information, all at varying levels of perceived importance. The most important is "loudest" in the brain, and the less important things are quieter--almost like static background noise. The idea is that during sleep, the volume of everything is turned down and the unimportant is filtered out, while the important--though more quiet--remains. With the background noise filtered out, the important ideas and events are more clearly perceived. SO COOL! …Yup. I am a definite nerd.

Mental Status

This may be the fastest I've ever recovered from a cold. Seriously. I've still got a few lingering symptoms--stuffyish nose, a bit of weakness and achiness--but it's minimal. I credit, in part, the full NINE HOURS (!!!) of sleep I got last night. Bam. I felt as close to a million bucks this morning as a sick person can be expected to feel. That being said, I gotta get over to the yoga studio to clean (I clean in trade for my practice--it's an awesome deal) so I'll keep this pretty basic.

Nourishment

 • 8:20--Bone broth, Gut Elixir, echinacea, pickle and juice, ginger, 2 eggs and kale in ghee
 • 10:30--20 oz. coffee with coconut milk
 • 1:15--yam in coconut oil, sardines in lemon juice and olive oil, echinacea
 • 7:30--Pickle, echinacea, Brasa chicken in broth w/ leeks (and I was sure to eat all the good stuff off the chicken bones--cartilage, tendons, fat, skin… :)

Cash Check

$6--Brasa

Conditioning

Nope. Still taking it easy.

(…"brain-washing" alludes to a Radiolab on Sleep that I listened to a while ago--the scientists in the interview were theorizing, based on a variety of tests, that in essence during sleep, all of your day's experiences are at different "volumes" relative to their perceived importance: really important = really loud, not important = quiet. At night, everything gets turned down. The unimportant disappears from your conscious, while the important, though quieter, remains. Extra static "thought-noise" is gone so you can clearly access the important thing or things)

Day 12

So this isn't mine… but it's from a website that inspiring me to consider making my own tinctures! Check out Radical Homestead.

Mental Status

Still sick but I can feel it's not moved into a headache and shoulder tension and soreness, with a little bit of throat soreness lingering and congestion everywhere. I can definitely feel that taking it easy has sped up the process :) I've been taking a dose of the echinacea tincture every 3 hours or so, and periodically eating chopped ginger, too. Nothing like raw, chopped ginger soaking in vinegar to clear the sinuses :l

Nourishment

 • 10:00--Tea, ginger, echinacea tincture
 • 1:30--Beef chili w/ extra bone broth, savory yams and pecans, more echinacea, horseradish
